RIP Commander Jeffry Lyle Huber, US Navy (retired)

We learned, late, of the passing of Commander Jeffry L. Huber (retired) at the age of 57, on January 24, 2012.

He was one of ePluribus Media's bright bulbs who shined a light from his flight deck experience in a bounty of words wizened by U.S. Navy command and time on the USS Theodore Roosevelt.   It all sharpened the satire in his critcally acclaimed Bathtub Admirals.

He graced not only our shores but through the wider appeal of his blog, Pen and Sword, the DailyKos, and AntiWar.com, among other venues.

The spirit of his humor and insighted commentary are a loss and will be missed by many.

RIP Commander Huber.

Florida - Outsourcing Election Night to Microsoft

Every two years we get to raise the question, once again:

"Where were the Florida election results counted tonight?"

Because, for much of the last decade, the State of Florida has had a non-State entity hosting the election night results that Floridians trust are the accurate representation of their cumulative vote.

This scenario is the Florida replay of what we first identified had occurred in 2004 when Ohio's votes made a roundtrip through SMARTechcorp computers, in Tennessee, and George W. Bush beat John Kerry in the general election.

We've only been able to capture records of the IP address for the State of Florida's election night host computers since 2005.  Two years ago (maybe four) election results were hosted on computers managed by a company based in the state of Georgia.

If I was Newt Gingrich, I would be happy about that location, if it was repeated tonight.

Lying Karl Rove's lying about Elizabeth Warren and TARP

Simon Johnson provides his separate assessment of the lies and distortions used in attacking MA Senate candidate, Elizabeth Warren, at BaseLineScenario:

Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS has another ad out attacking Elizabeth Warren. This is beyond ludicrous – the ad attempts to blame Ms. Warren for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and for bank bailouts. The principle here seems to be that when the truth cannot be slanted in a way you want, just ignore the facts and go all out for disinformation.

I count at least five misrepresentations in the ad, and I suggest the following corrections (here):...

In case it's not so obvious, Karl Rove and American Crossroads / GPS are in full-blown service to launder the electoral interests of the richest 1% who don't have the numbers but have the money that designed the Citizens United decision exactly in order to be able to buy corporate speech, instead.

Senator Bernie Sanders, just yesterday, offered a Constitutional amendment in what I consider to be the last-ditch effort to reverse the Citizens United-induced spiral into a straight-up representative fascism.

Until that Amendment is passed, I guess, American Crossroads Watch will continue to respond to, for further example, what is likely to be a ramping of attacks on the efforts of candidates or officials like Virginia Governor Tim Kaine.

But it takes more than documenting the expose, and your help is needed to get the word out.  Please help spread it to your friends and families. Make the jump»

Last Chance: The Saving American Democracy Amendment

Of all the extraordinary things going on in the world right now, I don't believe there is an outcome that is more essential to assuring that our children can survive the corporatocratic nightmare blueprinted by SCOTUS' Citizen United decision, than the Saving American Democracy Amendment offered by Senator Bernie Sanders, of Vermont.

Please get on board, and help get this Amendment considered and passed.
-----
Warning that American democracy in endangered," Sen. Bernie Sanders on Thursday proposed a constitutional amendment to overturn a Supreme Court ruling that allowed unrestricted and secret campaign spending by corporations on U.S. elections. The first constitutional amendment ever proposed by Sanders during his two decades in Congress would reverse the narrow 5-to-4 ruling in Citizens United vs. the Federal Elections Commission.

Happy Two Month Celebration to #OWS

#Occupy Wall Street continues to spin off new heroes.

"She wouldn't take my money. That was the day of the eviction of Zuccotti, the same day. And she'd been listening to the news all day, she saw everything that had happened."

"I can't charge you money, this is for the people," she said.

She was born in the projects. She opened up her home to us.

Commenter in response thread - "Throughout the United States a million conservative heads just exploded."

The above is a comment thread response to the posted excerpt of an interview with the 45-year old creator of the Verizon Building-projected 'bat-signal' designed to celebrate the two-month birthday of Occupy Wall Street.

"99% / MIC CHECK! / LOOK AROUND / YOU ARE A PART / OF A GLOBAL UPRISING / WE ARE A CRY / FROM THE HEART / OF THE WORLD / WE ARE UNSTOPPABLE / ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE / HAPPY BIRTHDAY / #OCCUPY MOVEMENT / OCCUPY WALL STREET / list of cities, states and countries / OCCUPY EARTH / WE ARE WINNING / IT IS THE BEGINNING OF THE BEGINNING / DO NOT BE AFRAID / LOVE."

Al Jazeera's review of Koch brother chances for buying US government outright is important

People & Power - The Koch Brothers

Al Jazeera may be perceived as having bias issues with some of the nuances on reporting intra-Arab stories but even there, Al Jazeera is one of my standard sources for in-depth reading of the players in the game.

But they recently have picked up on the powerful place of the Kochs in a generation of influence buying and selling in the government of these United States. I think this is a nice review of the current issues, including interviews with the Americans for Prosperity players, such as Tim Phillips.

"Yes, we've put substantial money into Wisconsin, I won't detail numbers but it's substantial."

Investigate Oakland Police actions on 10/25/11 against OWS Protesters

Our bureaucracy and law enforcement is practicing acts of violence and tactical terrorism against its own citizens. These citizens are fully backed by their legal rights afforded to them by the US Constitution. These acts are unacceptable on moral, legal, and humanitarian grounds. We the people will not stand for this abuse. This is about democracy. This is about human rights, your human rights.

The Mayor Ms. Jean Quan ordered these attacks, and we request that she be investigated thoroughly for human rights violations against the American people. The police officers who obeyed her unconstitutional, unethical, and illegal orders are legally responsible for what they have done. They had a choice to obey or disobey, as their counterparts in Albany recently did. They proceeded with these actions and they are fully culpable for the choice they made and the harm and injuries that they caused. Make the jump»

Hartmann: Will Corporations get the Right to Commit Genocide?

Is GENOCIDE okay as “corporate business”? Chief Justice Roberts et al. will decide.

I am unsure as to what aspect of this story disturbs me the most.

That such an issue is a legal dispute in these United States, at all, the very incredible nature of the issue, or most simply, the fact that while it's incredible, that the danger is nightmarishly believable under the Roberts Court!?

Senator Bernie Sanders on the dangers of #OccupyWallStreet

Declaration of the Occupation of New York City

This document was accepted by the NYC General Assembly on september 29, 2011

As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.

As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known. Make the jump»

White House Petition: Recognize the men and women who are occupying Wall Street

This is a whitehouse.gov petition asking President Obama's Administration to recognize the protest movement, #OccupyWallStreet. .

Go to WhiteHouse.gov and sign the petition. http://wh.gov/gPv

-----

we petition the obama administration to:

Recognize the men and women who are occupying wall street

Mr.Obama, this is a petition for you to publicly recognize, whether in a live speech, or in one of your weekly youtube addresses, the #occupywallstreet movement that is currently taking place in NYC.

These men and women are trying to send a message to their fellow Americans and to the world- the big banks and the super-rich, who is "buying out congress", are the primary drivers of the ongoing recession.

Unfortunately, they are largely being ignored by the media in the United States due to the "small size" of the protests. Note that "small size" has not deterred Fox, CNN and other US news channels/newspapers from covering, and even putting on the front page, Tea Party and other far right protests, some of which have had as little as 100 people (#occupywallst varies from 500-3000)

Created: Sep 23, 2011
Signatures needed by October 23, 2011 to reach goal of 5,000 - 4,209
Total signatures on this petition - 791

#OccupyWallStreet will not be televised

From what I'm able to tell, the organized protest movement that began a sustained encampment in Lower Manhattan's Zuccotti Park (aka Liberty Park) under the banner of #OccupyWallStreet, is filling the classic script presaged by Gil Scott-Heron.

Of course, the owners of the commercial broadcast media responsible for keeping the wheels of American commerce spinning so favorably and so fast, in their direction, probably don't see so much editorial room in their broadcast day for news about the protests against the investment banks that have done so much damage to the world's finanicial markets.

So, of oourse, in full irony, I refer you to Current TV and Keith Olbermann's chat with Michael Moore to help make that point, you know that they know.
